From Town & Country

  • New Jersey Senator Corey Booker will appear on the second night of the second round of debates for candidates vying for the Democratic Party's 2020 presidential nomination. The debate is July 31 on CNN.

  • Booker is one of two unmarried candidates in the Democratic field. (The other one is Marianne Williamson.) He is dating actress Rosario Dawson.

Should Democratic hopeful Cory Booker win the party's presidential nomination, and go on to win the general election, he would be America's first bachelor president in more than a century. In fact, the United States has only ever had two unmarried men serve as Commander-in-Chief.

The first was James Buchanan, who served as president from 1857 to 1861, and the second was Grover Cleveland. Booker would become the third, though he does currently have a girlfriend.

But before we get ahead of ourselves (and frankly, the Democratic caucuses, which at this point are still almost a year away), take a look back at Booker's current relationship with movie star Rosario Dawson.

Dawson and Booker met at a political fundraiser for Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous several years ago.

Cory says initially, "She didn’t give me the time of day," but later, they met each other again, and hit things off.

At his CNN town hall in March 2019, he shared the story of how he got her number. "So we met again, and I had one of those really awkward experiences. I’m a United States senator, and I had to get up the courage to walk up to her and ask her for her phone number," he said. "And this doesn’t make me nervous, but that made me nervous, and she gave me the phone number."

Dawson confirmed that she was dating Booker to TMZ in March of 2019.

While in Reagan National Airport in D.C., the reporter asked her about the rumors of their romance, which she confirmed. "I am just grateful to be with someone that I respect and love and admire so much," she said.

Booker had previously hinted at their relationship, telling The Breakfast Club radio show, "I got a boo," in February of this year. Since their relationship has gone public, he's continued to praise Dawson.

For example, when asked in his recent CNN town hall, if he might get married sometime soon, Booker said, "I have an incredible girlfriend," adding, "She is just simply amazing and I am hopeful, as is my mother."

And in an interview with Good Day New York in April, he emphasized that they are committed to one another

“She and I are not trying to put this through a political lens," he said. "We’re just two people in love trying to build a great relationship every single day.”

During that same interview, Booker also said he hopes his relationship with the actress "will last forever."
