Corrections officer, inmate injured in crash during transport to Bernalillo County jail

Apr. 17—Officials say a Metropolitan Detention Center officer and the inmate the officer was taking to the facility were injured in a crash Wednesday afternoon on Albuquerque's West Side.

MDC spokeswoman Candace Hopkins said both the officer and inmate were hospitalized in the crash.

She said around 2:30 p.m., the officer crashed an MDC transport vehicle into an SUV on the Interstate 40 frontage road near the jail.

Hopkins said the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office was investigating the crash, and did not give any other details.

BCSO spokeswoman Jayme Fuller said the inmate tried to escape after the crash by attempting to steal another vehicle. She gave no other details on the incident.
