Coroner: Man treated for medical condition dies at prison in Spartanburg County

An inmate at a Spartanburg County prison died there on Sunday.

Terry Moore, 63, incarcerated at Tyger River Correctional Institution, died at 7:22 a.m., Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

According to Clevenger, prison staff had treated Moore for a medical condition and there were no signs of ill-treatment or abuse. A forensic exam will be completed on Monday morning.

Chrysti Shain, spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, told the Herald-Journal there was no evidence of foul play in Moore's death.

"We ask that you please remember the family of Mr. Moore in your thoughts and prayers during their time of loss and grief," Clevenger said.

A study from Incarceration Transparency South Carolina, a project supported by Madalyn Wasilczuk, assistant professor at the University of South Carolina Law School, found that there were 18 deaths at the correctional facility, located in Enoree, between 2015 and 2021, the Greenville News and Spartanburg Herald-Journal previously reported. Additionally, there were two deaths in 2022, one last year and one on Jan. 2 of this year.

There has been no request for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate Moore's death.
