Three dead after morning crash in I-83 construction zone

FAIRVIEW TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) — Three construction workers are dead after a crash happened Wednesday morning, April 17, in a construction zone on Interstate 83 South.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. near the Fishing Creek exit in Fairview Township when a large box truck, operated by a 24-year-old driver, collided with a construction vehicle in an active work zone, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police say the collision caused the box truck to continue onto the shoulder of the road where it hit the three construction workers. All three workers, who PennDOT says worked for CriLon Corp. of Somerset, were pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no word on the condition of the truck driver.

I-83 South was closed for hours on Wednesday morning between Exit 36, Fishing Creek. and Exit 35, PA 177 Lewisberry, while crews responded to the scene. The interstate has since reopened.

This crash comes as officials are working to raise awareness for work zone safety across the state for National Work Zone Awareness Week. On Wednesday PennDOT posted to X telling people to wear an orange shirt to show their support on Go Orange Day.

“PennDOT is deeply saddened by the news of the workers who lost their lives in the work zone crash on Interstate 83 in York County. These workers left their homes fully expecting to return safely at the end of their shift. Our hearts go out to them, their families and everyone impacted by this tragedy. This is National Work Zone Safety Week, and this incident drives home the fact that motorists need to be alert and drive with caution in our work zones for the safety of our workers and themselves.”
