Coronavirus in Shasta County: How many vaccinated people died, were hospitalized since August?

COVID-19 case numbers are dropping a bit in November in Shasta County, possibly signaling the beginning of the end of a surge in an outbreak that started in mid-August.

The Shasta County Public Health branch reported unusually high numbers of COVID-19 deaths last week after investigating fatalities that happened earlier in the fall.

Here are daily COVID-19 updates with new cases, hospitalization numbers, vaccination percentages and deaths reported.

Friday: Here's how many vaccinated people died, were hospitalized since August

Three men and a woman are the latest COVID-19 fatalities reported by Shasta County Public Health.

The men in their 40s, 50s and 60s. The woman was in her 80s.

Public Health said it confirmed 42 COVID-19 deaths in November — 22 of which the agency reported this week. As of Friday, 406 Shasta County residents died of coronavirus since March 2020.

Since mid-August, about 11% of Shasta County residents who died from COVID-19 were fully vaccinated — meaning they had the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine or both of the 2-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccine series.

About 10.5% of those hospitalized with the virus were fully vaccinated.

This week, the Shasta County Public Health branch released information on the latest vaccination numbers, tallied through Wednesday.

  • 52.6% of Shasta County residents are fully vaccinated. That's up from 52% last week.

  • About 8% of the county's population had one dose of the 2-dose Moderna or Pfizer series. That's down from 8.1% last week.

  • 60.6% of Shasta County residents had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That's up from 60.1% last week.

Wednesday: 7 more die; Shasta County coronavirus deaths exceed 400

As of Wednesday, 402 Shasta County residents died from COVID-19, according to Public Health.

That total includes seven people whose deaths Public ealth were reported Wednesday afternoon. They were:

  • A man in his 50s

  • Two men in their 60s

  • Three men in their 70s

  • A woman in her 80s

Thus far in November, Public Health confirmed and reported 38 COVID-19 deaths in Shasta County.

Tuesday: 4 men die of COVID-19; hospitalizations drop

Another four people in Shasta County died of COVID-19, according to Public Health, pushing the total number of coronavirus fatalities to 395 since March 2020.

Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency announced those who died were:

  • A man in his 50s

  • Two men in their 60s

  • A man in his 70s

Thus far in November, HHSA confirmed 31 deaths caused by COVID-19: 16 women and 15 men. They were all in their 40s or older.

The good news on Tuesday was Shasta County COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped to 58 patients. That's the lowest number since Oct. 23 — a period in mid-October when hospitals experienced a significant but temporary dip in coronavirus patient numbers.

More good news: The number of hospitalized people sick enough from COVID-19 to land in an intensive care unit dropped to eight — the lowest number since Oct. 15.

Monday: 5 women, 2 men die of virus

On Monday, Public Health confirmed COVID-19 killed another seven people in Shasta County.

They were:

  • A woman in her 50s

  • A woman and two men in their 60s

  • A woman in her 70s

  • Two women in their 80s

Their deaths bring the total number of COVID-19 fatalities to 391, according to Shasta County Public Health.

Also on Monday, the state's public health agency released case numbers and other data for the week of Nov. 1 through Sunday.

  • There were 457 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 — about 254 cases per 100,000 Shasta County residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers 100 or more a high outbreak of the virus.

  • The 7-day test positivity rate — the percentage of coronavirus tests that come back positive from labs — was 4.8%.

  • The average number of people sick enough with COVID-19 to be in North State hospitals was 65 to 66 per day. That number dropped from the 70s in late October.

  • There were 29 COVID-19 deaths reported to Public Health last week. Thus far, Shasta County Public Health confirmed 27 of those deaths were due to COVID-19, compared to 22 deaths during the first week of October.

Public Health didn't send a COVID-19 update on Veterans Day. The following data includes Thursday's new cases.

  • New cases: 167

  • Total cases since March 2020: 21,693 (11,658 women, 9,924 men)

  • New deaths reported: Four

  • Total deaths: 406

  • Hospitalized: 50 — nine in intensive care units

  • Active cases: 334

New cases by age group:

  • Ages 0-12: 18

  • Ages 13-19: 20

  • Ages 20-29: 21

  • Ages 30-39: 30

  • Ages 40-49: 14

  • Ages 50-59: 18

  • Ages 60-69: 23

  • Ages 70-79: Eight

  • Ages 80-89: Eight

  • Age 90 and older: Five

  • Age not reported: Two

Here are the numbers of people vaccinated and unvaccinated who were hospitalized due to COVID and those who died from the virus — tallied over the three-month period from Aug. 10 and Wednesday, according to Public Health:

  • Fully vaccinated residents: 79,699

  • Unvaccinated residents: 71,934

  • Hospitalized patients: 442. Of those, 42 were vaccinated.

  • Residents who died of COVID-19: 155. Of those, 14 were vaccinated.
