Boris Johnson is facing growing calls, including from within his own party, to sack his most senior aide Dominic Cummings following claims he made several trips to see his family in County Durham, while the country was being told to stay at home.

When asked if he was “considering his position” on Saturday, Mr Cummings said: “Obviously not”.

In the US, president Donald Trump has sparked outrage after leaving the White House to play at his golf course in Virginia, despite more than 1.6 million cases of Covid-19 having been confirmed in the US on Saturday, with the death toll approaching 100,000.

Numbers of coronavirus cases in Russia are also rising fast, with the country reporting 8,599 new cases in the past 24 hours.
