The London Underground could be a hotbed for the spread of the coronavirus, doctors have warned, after a woman in the capital became the ninth person to test positive for the deadly disease.

Meanwhile the Chinese province at the epicentre of the outbreak reported a record rise in the death toll under a new diagnostic method, with 242 deaths recorded on Wednesday, taking the total number to more than 1,350.

It came as forty-four more people tested positive for the virus, known as Covid-19, on board a cruise ship quarantined off Japan, with 218 of the 713 tested on board the Diamond Princess infected. The ship is still carrying more than 3,500 passengers and crew members.
