Coronavirus: Global death toll surpasses 300,000

Here’s a recap of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic for Thursday, May 14, 2020.

Over 4.4 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, and more than 302,000 people have died.

In the United States, there have been over 1.4 million confirmed cases and more than 85,000 deaths. Nearly 3 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, according to data released Thursday. More than 36 million have filed since mid-March. President Trump traveled to Pennsylvania Thursday to tour a medical equipment manufacturing facility. He did not wear a mask.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), is stepping down as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee amid a federal probe of his stock trading related to the coronavirus. Dr. Rick Bright, a whistleblower who was ousted from his position at a top U.S. health agency, testified on Capitol Thursday, telling lawmakers that "indifference" landed the nation in "deep s**t."
