Coronavirus: Fauci warns Senate of 'inevitable' outbreaks

Here’s a recap of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic for Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

More than 4.2 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, and over 292,000 have died.

In the U.S., there have been over 1.3 million confirmed cases and more than 82,000 deaths.

While testifying on Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that reopening the U.S. economy too quickly could spark another outbreak. He also told lawmakers that the U.S. death toll is "likely higher" than what has been officially reported.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a more than $3 trillion coronavirus aid package ahead of a Friday vote. But the legislation faces an immediate roadblock in the Republican-controlled Senate.
