Coronation Street star Anthony Cotton has reacted to the soap's BAFTA snub.

The ITV soap was snubbed by this year’s BAFTA TV Awards nominations for the second year in a row, having lost out on a spot in the Soap & Continuing Drama category to Casualty, EastEnders and Emmerdale.

Despite the snub, Sean Tully actor Cotton still made his way onto the BAFTA red carpet this evening (May 12), where he was in full support of the soaps up for the award.

"I feel like I'm excited to see how our friends over in Yorkshire and the East End do. I've been coming to these for years – I think it was 25 years ago I came to my first BAFTAs," he told Digital Spy and other press when asked how he felt about the snub.

"So we've had our fair share. We've got enough silverware in the cabinet, so it's nice to let somebody else have it for once."

Corrie has previously won the award seven times – the second-highest amount of wins behind EastEnders – with the last time having been in 2022.

"It's just a nice thing to be able to catch up with people. I've seen one of our directors, Matt Hilton, who also creates Emmerdale," Cotton continued.

"So we're all part of an extended family and I've got friends that are here that I've known for donkeys' years."

When asked who he's routing for tonight, Cotton said children's presenter Floella Benjamin, who is being honoured with the BAFTA Fellowship award for her "tireless support of children and young people" and for her "unwavering championing of diversity".

"I'm thrilled to see Floella Benjamin tonight. I love Floella Benjamin. I grew up with her. Television is in everybody's houses and lives and Floella Benjamin, when I was growing up, was always a hero in our house," he shared.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
