Coronation Street star Rob Mallard has responded to the surprise return of Nicky Wheatley to Weatherfield.

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that Kimberly Hart-Simpson will be returning to the soap after two years away as part of the Lauren Bolton disappearance storyline.

Addressing the comeback, Rob said it was "great having Kimberly back", adding: "Nicky is a good Corrie character and we really do have a great time working together.

"The nature of the storylines that Kimberley has can actually be quite funny to play out so we do have a laugh filming them. I’m thrilled to have her back."

The upcoming scenes will see Rob's character Daniel Osbourne turn to former escort Nicky as he tries to clear his name over Lauren's disappearance, believing Nicky can use her role as a community outreach worker to get information from the girls she supports in the streets.

He gets the idea to reach out to Nicky after Bethany reads an article revealing that Lauren has been working as an escort – though Daniel "absolutely" doesn’t factor in the detrimental effect speaking to Nicky could have on him.

"This is a prime example of Daniel trying to do something good and inadvertently making a complete mess of things," Rob explained.

"Daniel doesn’t think that this would blow back on him, to be seen out and about with Nicky, he’s just trying to clear his name and get the information that can redirect the attention of DS Swain."

Rob also suggested that Nicky being back on the scene "definitely has the potential" to throw a spanner in his and Bethany's relationship.

"Bethany had left before Daniel started meeting Nicky and to be honest, Nicky was almost like a coping strategy for Daniel to deal with the fact that Bethany had gone as well as Sinead," he said.

"So, if Bethany knows that then I think she will be suspicious to say the least – and rightly so, especially with what Nicky does for a living and their history."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
