The Corning boys bowling team won their first ever state title, on Sunday. The Hawks capped off a phenomenal season, adding a NYSPHSAA Division 1 title to a STAC Championship, and state qualifier win. Corning stormed out of the gates at AMF Strike N Spare Lanes, with a career game from Cameron Kennedy. The standout senior bowled a 300, to open the eventual top series of the day. Kennedy closed out the banner performance with a 5th game score of 259, clinching the top spot. Kennedy believes his impressive performance of 1,381 total points, helped his confidence, but holding the state title plaque made 5 seasons of work all worth while.

“It feels great, said Kennedy. I’ve been waiting for this moment for about 5 years. I’m so glad we finally got it.”

Kennedy’s teammate and fellow senior Camryn Stefanini echoed the excitement.

“It’s definitely a big accomplishment, said Stefanini. We both wanted this for a very long time. We knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when.”

Kennedy and Stefanini helped the Hawks to an overall winning score of 6,264. Corning held off Section 5 power, Victor with an impressive team effort. In addition to Kennedy’s career day, Peyton Nelson took home 8th, while Stefanini (12th), Zach Sturdevant (15th), Dante White (18th) claimed spots in the top-20. Max Aponte, and Bentley Goodier backed the effort.

After the historic win, the Hawks returned home in style. Corning area first responders led the team through a parade, which spanned from Market Street back to the high school, where a group of supporters and parents greeted them.

Corning Head Coach William Condon was filled with emotion after the victory, citing the overwhelming excitement, and nerves, along with the community support the team received.

“To come back with a police escort like that is special, said Condon. You only get one hometown to make your mark. These kids deserve this and it has really been wonderful.”
