Cornell wrestling ready to take another IVY League crown

ITHACA, N.Y. (WETM) – Cornell wrestling has their sights set on a big weekend.

The 10th ranked Big Red is looking to win its third consecutive IVY League Championship and they’ll have to do it this time on the road. Cornell (8-3) battles Princeton (5-3) Friday night at 7:30 PM and follows that with a Saturday dual meet at Penn (4-4) at 7 PM. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+

Like Cornell, both Princeton and Penn are (3-0) in the IVY League which makes this the biggest weekend of the year in conference action. The Big Red won a staggering 17 straight IVY League Championships from 2003-2019 before Princeton took down Cornell in 2020. It was the Tigers’ first conference title since 1986.

Cornell is paced by defending NCAA Champion at 133 pounds Vito Arujau who’s back in the starting lineup. Arujau (8-1) is ranked second in the country after suffering an early season loss to Lehigh’s Ryan Crookham. Vito is also the defending Senior World Freestyle Wrestling Champion at 61kg.

The Big Red also has several top ten ranked wrestlers hitting the mat this weekend. Freshman Meyer Shapiro (15-2) is sixth at 157 pounds, junior Julian Ramirez (15-2) fourth at 165 pounds, and All-Americans junior Chris Foca (13-3) is seventh at 184 while 197 pound senior Jake Cardenas (16-3) is seventh.
