ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Cornell wrestling’s Vito Arujau capped off his outstanding career for The Big Red with some more hardware.

Not only did Arujau capture his second consecutive NCAA Championship at 133 pounds in Kansas City just under two weeks ago, Vito was named Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Wrestler of The Year on Monday.

Arujau battled his way through the NCAA Tournament from a six seed to the top of the podium earning the hard-fought title in college wrestling. Vito avenged his only two losses of the season to Lehigh’s Ryan Crookham (second seed) in the NCAA Semis 13-3 by major decision and then beat top seeded Daton Fix of Oklahoma State 5-3 for the title.

Arujau finished with an (18-2) season mark and an overall record of (93-9) while helping Cornell finish second in the country behind Penn State in the final NCAA team standings. Vito finishes his Cornell career as a four-time All-American, two-time NCAA and EIWA Champion and is tied for the most NCAA Tournament wins in program history with 20 (Yianni Diakomihalis, Kyle Dake, and Troy Nickerson also had 20).

Next up for Arujau, the 2023 Senior World Freestyle Champion, is an automatic bid to the 2024 Olympic Wrestling Trials in State College April 19-20. Arujau receives a bye into the semifinals of the 57kg weight class for the event. This year marks the final year in the EIWA Tournament for Cornell as the program will compete in the first-ever IVY League Tournament next season at Princeton University.
