Cop, civilian wounded in shooting in Humboldt Park neighborhood

A Chicago police officer and a civilian were each wounded Thursday evening in a police shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. near West Ferdinand Street and Avers Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

An officer was taken to Stroger Hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. An adult male was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition from gunshots, Langford said.

A second officer was also taken to an area hospital for a minor issue, Langford added.

Chicago police said they would reveal details of the shooting at an evening news conference, but more than four hours after the shooting, police still hadn’t made a statement.

At a monthly police board meeting Thursday evening, police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the injured officer was expected to recover. “We hope that that officer will make a speedy recovery. They’re (CPD officers) out there working hard, trying to keep the streets safe,” Snelling said. “The officer, it sounds like, will be OK.”
