Cooler and brighter today; aurora possible tonight

We get more sunshine around central Indiana today but we are off to a cooler start. Temperatures have fallen to the 40s and low 50s this Friday morning. The jacket and the sunglasses would be the main items to grab as you’re heading out the door. There is a minor chance for a few spotty showers around this afternoon and evening. Having the umbrella in the car could come in handy but if you forget it, really, the rain won’t amount to much for those that get it.

Temperatures Friday afternoon will warm to below average but comfortable conditions as highs peak in the mid to upper 60s. The average for today’s date in Indianapolis is 72°.

If you’re heading to the Pacers game tonight, tip-off is at 7 PM. Temperatures will fall from the mid 60s at the start of the game to the low 60s by the end. Again, a minor rain chance in the area will be around.

A ‘Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch’ has been issued by The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). This is the first time this watch has been issued since January of 2005, nearly 20 years. The northern lights may be visible over much of the northern half of the country and possibly as far south as Alabama to northern California. For us here in central Indiana, head away from the city lights to have the best potential to view this. However, don’t get your hopes up too high. While the geomagnetic activity is highly elevated, cloud cover could be a problem for us. Clouds will be increasing late in the evening through the overnight ahead of rain chances. Your best chance to see this here locally, if you can, would likely be before 2 AM Saturday morning. Give it a shot and send us your pictures if you do!

A wave of rain moves through the area early Saturday but it should be on it’s way out near daybreak. Heading to the track for the Grand Prix tomorrow, we’re in good shape. Skies should brighten again for the afternoon and temperatures will rise to near 70°. It will be rather breezy with gusts near 30 mph.

Mother’s Day look great! While it will be off to a cool start, temperatures will rise to the low 70s in the afternoon.
