FOX40 Chief Meteorologist Adam Epstein said he forecasts a few scattered showers throughout the day on Saturday and that thunderstorms are possible in the foothills, but less likely in the Sacramento Valley.

“The Saturday storm is taking shape,” Epstein said. “Temps will tumble from the low 80s [on] Friday to low 60s [on] Saturday.”

He continued, “A wave of moderate [to] heavy rain will pass through the Valley in the AM hours, and there will be 5-10″ of snow at lake level and 10-20″ of snow over 7000 feet!!”

NWS adds that wind gusts in the Valley are anticipated to register around 20-30 miles per hour.

A winter weather advisory has been issued by the NWS for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe area above 5,000 feet in elevation from 11 a.m. on Saturday to 8 a.m. on Sunday.

“Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be difficult and strong winds could cause damage to trees and power lines,” Epstein added.

Snowfall is expected to begin at higher elevations (near 7,500 feet) on Saturday morning around 8 a.m. with heavy snow arriving in the afternoon at lower elevations (near 4,000 feet). Steady snow could continue into the evening before tapering off into showers at night and into Sunday morning.

NWS said wind gusts in the Sierra region could reach speeds between 35-60 mph.
