CHARLEVOIX — First off, I want to welcome Tim Kenney to the county’s board of commissioners as the representative for District 3.

Mr. Kenney and his wife offered to step in during the board’s transition after losing Pat Harmon. It takes a strong person and couple to step up. We are very thankful for Tim joining the board and look forward to his contributions to our collective future.

Another shoutout must go to all the clerks in our county as well as to our Commission on Aging Director on Beaver Island, Lonnie Allen. In November, 2022, Michigan voters approved an early voting process for our elections. This means that the city and township clerks and our county clerk, Julia Drost, had to prepare, man, and oversee the polls for nine consecutive days prior to the Sunday before Election Day. They did all this while maintaining their day-to-day operations. Voting on Election Day typically runs from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Imagine adding nine more days to that regiment. I thank them for their service to the citizens of our county.

And finally, the commissioners received numerous communications praising the efforts of Lonnie Allen, who is the Beaver Island Commission on Aging Director. It is so nice to hear of the dedication and energy Lonnie brings to the job from the constituency that is served. The positivity expressed in the postcards, notes and a handwritten letter speak volumes and means a lot to the commissioners.

And with April just a couple of weeks away, I wish you a happy spring and remind you to take in general quiet and calmness in the county, for as we all know, in just a little while, our roads, lakes, sidewalks and businesses will be filled to capacity; it’s called Spring Break for a reason.
