How To: Make a Contact Group on iPhone

Sometimes your contact list in your phone gets way too cluttered and all you want to is make it quicker to sift through friends, family, and co-workers.

With the release of the iPhone 4 Apple added Address Book integration to its contact lists. This means that you can create the address forms that you normally would and import that information and the settings to your iPhone. This allows you to easily e-mail, chat or call from the same contact source on the phone.

We’ll help you set it up whether you’re using a PC or a Mac:

A couple notes before we get into this: Getting the contact list onto the phone can be easy, however, editing and creating groups directly on the phone isn’t possible without apps like Groups, Yo Mail or iGroup Mail. At last check, none of those apps are free.

Setting up on a PC

1. Plug the dock connector end of the USB cable for the iPhone into the phone and the other end into a USB port on the computer.

2. Run iTunes

3. Under the “Devices” list click the iPhone tab. Select the “Info” tab and then check the box that reads “Sync contacts with.” Now, click the double arrows and select “Outlook” from the drop-down menu. Finally, click “Sync” to transfer your iPhone contacts to Microsoft Outlook.

4. Start up Outlook. Find the “Contacts” entry in the “Personal Folders” list. Right-click “Contacts” and select “New Folder”. Type in a new name for your group (i.e. “Friends”, “Family”) and click OK. Now, just drag the contacts that you want into the group folder. Repeat the process for any additional groups that you want.

5. Bring up iTunes again. Click the “Info” tab and scroll down to the “Advanced” set of options. It should be at the bottom of the window. Now, click the box next “Contacts”. Your iPhone contacts will now be replaced by the new groups that you just created. As long as you performed the sync in Step 3 individual contacts won’t be lost.

6. Check it out by clicking the “Contacts” icon on your iPhone. Tap the “Groups” button on the top left of the window to view your new groups.
