Construction worker fatally injured on UGA campus; investigation underway

A construction worker was killed Friday during a work related accident on the University of Georgia campus, according to UGA police.

The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday at the Adult Education Center, 48 Baxter St., according to the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Rescue. Firefighters were on scene about three minutes after the initial call came in and assisted with transporting the man to the hospital, according to the report.

Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson identified the worker as Trevor Wilkie, 36, of Athens. Medical authorities notified Wilson Monday that Wilkie died of massive injuries caused when he was crushed by a forklift.

Wilson identified the vehicle as a Lull forklift, which is bigger and has larger tires than the most common forklifts seen in warehouses.

Police officials said Wilkie was employee with IMI Construction in Watkinsville. He was working on a steam line project on campus when he was hit by the forklift, according to police.

UGA police, Athens-Clarke County Fire and EMS and National EMS responded to treat the worker.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was notified of the accident.
