Construction starts on new $8.5 million apartment building in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority and its development partner have started to build a new apartment building as part of a larger effort to improve South Baton Rouge.

Partners Southeast, the development arm of the EBRPHA, has broken ground on Cypress River Lofts in Baton Rouge. According to an official news release Thursday, May 16, the $8.5 million investment will create 19 modern, energy-efficient flats with one and three bedrooms. It will be at Duane and Oklahoma streets near downtown.

“The long-term commitment to transform South Baton Rouge began in 2002 when EBRPHA was awarded a HOPE VI grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,” said J. Wesley Daniels Jr., CEO of Partners Southeast and EBRPHA.

Daniels said the construction of Cypress River Lofts is the third phase in a development plan. The first phase was a scattered site community with 33 units and the second phase was a 46-unit building on Highland Road.

“We recognize that we can be an economic driver to revitalize the South Baton Rouge neighborhoods with our innovative designs and access to capital,” said Daniels. “We also believe that these developments will continue to attract private investment as was the case with River South on Highland Road. We are committed to continuing our transformational strategy.”

Cypress River Lofts construction is expected to be completed in October 2024.
