Construction set to begin on new roundabout along Highway 101

Construction is set to begin on a new roundabout along Highway 101 after the project broke ground on Friday.

The new roundabout will be built at the intersection of Avila Beach Drive and Highway 101 to ease traffic congestion and improve safety for all commuters, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Works.

“We’re proud to be constructing the first roundabout on a county road,” said John Waddell, deputy director of Public Works. “There’s no better location than right here to demonstrate the safety benefits and efficiency of a modern roundabout.”

The project will include a new single-lane roundabout at the southbound Highway 101 intersection, a new lot with a stop for RTA buses and the Avila trolley, new sidewalks, crosswalks, protected bike lanes and traffic-calming improvements on the northbound off-ramp.

The project is estimated to cost $13 million and will be completed by summer 2025, according to the agency. The project will be managed by Public Works, Caltrans and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments.

“What we’re going to have here is going to enormously improve and change this area of Highway 101 and the Avila Beach intersection in a way that is going to be so transformational,” District 3 Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg said in the release.
