Construction on first Kentucky Wawa starts soon. Where the new-to-market stores are headed

The popular Pennsylvania-based Wawa announced last year it planned to expand its chain of convenience stores to the Bluegrass state with multiple locations.

Groundbreaking on the first of those Kentucky stores is set to begin in June, Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce said.

Fans of the roadside favorite, which combines a traditional convenience store with a gas station and fresh-food service, can expect the first stores to open in 2025.

As of late last summer, the company had about 15 sites under contract in Boone, Bullitt, Fayette, Hardin, Jefferson, Jessamine, Oldham, Scott, Shelby, and Warren counties, according to the company.

It’s planning about 40 locations across Kentucky over an eight- to 10-year growth plan.

Wawa sites, which serve custom hoagies and hot breakfasts, among other foods, are typically built on 1.5- to 2-acre sites and include approximately 6,000-square-foot stores, gas pumps and parking spaces.

Wawa stores coming to Kentucky

Four Louisville Metro stores were confirmed by Wawa during a press event in September 2023:

  • 12415 Taylorsville Road

  • 9650 Preston Crossing Blvd

  • 4314 Bardstown Road

  • 7203 Apple Mill Drive/7601 Vaughn Mill Road

Groundbreaking on the Preston Crossing Boulevard store is set for early June, according to the company. More details on opening timelines are expected at that time.

Additional sites, confirmed via planning and zoning applications filed with Louisville Metro Government, would bring more Wawa locations to south and southwest Jefferson County.

These planned stores are located at 6220 Shepherdsville Road and 5229 Dixie Highway.

Other planned Wawa locations include an Oldham County store at the intersection of Highway 393 and Commerce Parkway in Buckner and a Bullitt County site at 415 Oakbrooke Drive in Mt. Washington.

Wawa stores coming to Southern Indiana

One store planned for Clark County, Indiana, was confirmed by Wawa late last summer.

A location is currently under construction at 1354 Veterans Parkway in Clarksville.

The Town of Sellersburg announced earlier this month that a Wawa would be built at the intersection of State Road 60 and Appleleaf Lane and that the project would include a new stop light.
