Connor Shingleton capped off a brilliant senior season with a third-place finish at the 2021 Division II State Cross Country Championships.

The senior All-Ohioan completed the course at Fortress Obetz with a time of 15:39.9.

Only two other runners were better - Carroll’s Jack Agnew (15:31.3) and Marlington’s Noah Graham (15:33.8).

Shingleton will go down as one of the best runners, if not the best runner, in school history.

“Connor left it all on the course,” stated Head Coach Olivia Scott. “I cannot say enough great things about this young man. He has our school record and is the highest state-place finisher. He has set the bar for what being a champion is, both on and off the cross-country course. He has left a legacy in our program that all others can look up to.”

Shingleton had a great final year for the Lions. He is the Division II-III Stark County champion, district champion, and is the first-ever Minerva boys regional champion. He holds the school record with a time of 15:38.

Grasyn Rettig concluded one of the better freshman seasons at Minerva by placing 58th in 16:44.8.

“Grasyn is one of the top freshmen in the state,” commented Coach Scott. “He has his sights set on All-Ohio next year.”

Freshman Ryan Cassidy was 125th in 17:26.6, sophomore Mason Steele was 133rd in 17:31.5, sophomore Owen Grubb was 156th in 18:04, junior Brandon Davis was 172nd in 18:38.5, and sophomore Connor Norris was 173rd in 18:38.8.

“The boys outperformed all expectations,” noted Coach Scott. “We could not be more proud of them. “They ran with the heart of a lion today. It was a dream season and the future is very bright.”
