Conn. lawmakers advance bill banning fracking by-products; 1 of 2 fracking bills progressing
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A bill attempting to address concerns about waste from hydraulic fracturing from being stored or disposed of in Connecticut is moving its way through the General Assembly.
The legislature's Environment Committee voted 20-8 on Wednesday to forward legislation banning the possession or storage of fracking waste to the House of Representatives.
A similar bill recently cleared the Energy and Technology Committee. That bill bans anyone from treating, discharging, disposing or storing any fracking waste in Connecticut, or using the waste to manufacture any item or product.
Fracking is the process of pumping fluid into or under the surface of the ground to create fractures in the rock to produce or recover oil or gas. While it's not happening in Connecticut, there are concerns out-of-state waste could be brought here.
