Republican eastern North Carolina Congressman Greg Murphy — himself a physician — announced in a statement on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with having a “base of skull tumor called a pituitary macroadenoma.” Murphy said that it appears the tumor is not cancerous, but that because of its size and potential for interfering “vital structures of the brain,” he has scheduled surgery to remove it.

The statement said “the prognosis excellent” but did not provide a date for the surgery or where it would take place. Numerous comments were posted to Murphy’s account on X from across the political spectrum expressing concern and wishes for a speedy recovery. Murphy will be opposed by a libertarian candidate in the November election, but no Democrat filed to run in the district, which was designed to guarantee a Republican victory.
