Congestion, crashes backed up traffic throughout region Thursday

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Crashes on Route 58 in Suffolk, Interstate 664 in Chesapeake and I-264 in Norfolk, along with congestion around the area’s major tunnels and bridges caused backups all over Hampton Roads Thursday afternoon.

All eastbound lanes were closed in Hampton at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel around 5:04 p.m. due to a bridge/tunnel stoppage, the Virginia Department of Transportation said. They have since reopened, but there was congestion in that area that backed up traffic for about three miles.

Route 58

Another crash on Route 58 backed up traffic in Suffolk Thursday afternoon, according to VDOT.

On Route 58 eastbound in Suffolk near Bob Foeller Drive, drivers faced delays due to a crash in that area, with the east left shoulder and the left lane closed as of 3:19 p.m.

Traffic was also backed up in both directions due to congestion at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, according to VDOT, and there were backups on eastbound Interstate 64 due to congestion around the High Rise Bridge area of Chesapeake.

Interstate 64

At mile marker 275 in Norfolk on I-64 westbound near 1st View Street, there was a crash that closed the west left shoulder around 5:40 p.m., VDOT said.

There was another crash reported on I-64 eastbound at mile marker 299.3 in Chesapeake near the Bowers Hill interchange. VDOT said the east center lane, right lane and right shoulder had closed, and traffic was backed up for about four miles as of 5 p.m.

On I-64 westbound at mile marker 277.2 in Norfolk near Granby Street, a crash closed the right shoulder and backed up traffic about 1.5 miles. as of 5:03 p.m.

There was also an eastbound crash on I-64 at mile marker 283.6 in Norfolk near the I-264 interchange that closed the east right center lane and right shoulder as of 5:12 p.m.

Westbound traffic at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel was backed up about 6.5 miles Thursday afternoon, while eastbound traffic was backed up about 3 miles, VDOT said. There was also congestion in the area of the James River Bridge.

Interstate 664

VDOT had also reported a crash on Interstate 664 at mile marker 19.5 in Chesapeake near the Route 58 interchange, and indicated that the north right outside lane and the right shoulder had been closed. Traffic backups were about 4.5 miles at one point.

Traffic appeared to move better on both sides of I-64 on the Peninsula moving away from the HRBT Thursday afternoon.

Interstate 264

VDOT said major congestion at the Downtown Tunnel westbound backed up traffic about two miles as of 5:15 p.m.

There was also a crash on I-264 westbound at mile marker 13.3 in Norfolk that was also causing delays early Thursday evening, with the east outside exit 15A narrowing, VDOT said.

Another crash on I-264 westbound at mile marker 15 closed caused backups of around two miles, according to VDOT.

Traffic cameras did not show major delays as of around 8 p.m. Thursday.
