Concord University hosted 2nd annual Women’s Empowerment Conference

ATHENS, WV (WVNS) – Dozens of women came together at Concord University Wednesday evening to host a Women’s Empowerment Conference.

The conference was hosted by Tri Sigma Sorority & Concord’s Women and Gender Studies program.

The conference was held for the first time the last year to great success.

When given the opportunity to host it again, Tri Sigma member Madison Addar said it was something they wanted to do.

“It was kind of a trial run at first. But its just been a really good opportunity for all of us to get together and gain a sense of value and empowerment,” Addar said.

The conference hosted several female speakers, each with a unique story to tell.

Through each story, the speaker was able to speak on how they felt empowered in their own life.

Vice President of Advancement Sarah Turner said this event is a great example of young women learning empowerment through cooperation.

“Taking that time to celebrate each other. To talk about, as women, what we deal with and overcoming adversity and celebrating those successes,” Turner said.

The event culminated with a final speech from Dr. Anita Skeen.

Skeen is a West Virginia native, a renowned author and professor, and a Concord Alumna.

Skeen believes events like this serve as a building block. One where women can find empowerment on current and future situations.

“Trust your instincts. Trust your instincts and believe you can do it. The quote I gave them Eleanor Roosevelt that has guided me is ‘You must do the thing that you think you cannot do’,” Skeen said.
