Company plans to close Regal Cinemas theater at Anchorage's Tikahtnu Commons
Jan. 21—The Regal Cinemas Stadium 16 Imax and RPX at Tikahtnu Commons is one of 39 locations that Regal's parent company plans to close as part of bankruptcy proceedings, according to court documents filed this week.
A Business Insider report was the first to detail the company's plans, which include a strategy to start rejecting leases beginning Feb. 15.
Regal, the second-largest chain in the country behind AMC Theatres, currently operates three theaters in Anchorage. That list includes the Tikahtnu location, Regal Totem on Muldoon Drive and Regal Dimond Center. The company also runs the Regal Goldstream in Fairbanks.
Only the Tikahtnu theater was included on the list slated for closure.
Calls and emails to Regal Cinemas to confirm a timeline and other details of the potential closure were not returned this week.
Regal parent company Cineworld had earlier announced the closing of a dozen theaters, after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September.
The Tikahtnu location, which opened in 2010, is described by the company as Alaska's first Imax theater. With 16 screens, it's also among the state's largest movie theaters.
Tikahtnu Commons is a partnership between Cook Inlet Region Inc. and Browman Development Co. Inc.
Efforts to reach California-based Browman, which handles leasing for the property, were unsuccessful. CIRI had no comment.
