Community remembers Kingston Campbell one year later

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Kingston Campbell’s family and friends gathered at Peaks View Park Wednesday on the anniversary of his death.

The 6-year-old was killed when a group ran up to his home on May 1, 2023, and fired several rounds into the house. Kingston was shot in his bed. Police are still searching for his killers.

Meanwhile, his community is keeping his memory alive. R.S. Payne Elementary School dressed their gates in blue for the anniversary and held the park gathering.

“The awareness is so great,” his aunt Joy Loving said. “They are still keeping him alive and the school did so much for him today.”

She and Kingston’s great aunt, Meisha Coles, said the outpouring of love and support via cards, calls, and texts is still overwhelming even a year later.

“It’s overwhelming, but it’s great,” said Coles.

Posters for the event also reminded the community of the Kingston Reward Fund, meant to encourage people to come forward with information. Nearly six months into their investigation, police told WFXR they had only received five tips and none had moved the investigation forward.

“Justice for Kingston, please speak up,” said Coles. “Don’t be afraid to speak up. Imagine if this happened to you.”

“We want the people who did anything to say anything,” said Loving. “If you know anything to say anything. The fact that people are still walking knowing that they did something with no care in the world that you killed a six-year-old?”

Monday, Kingston’s friends and family wore blue, his favorite color, and focused on celebrating his life.

“It still hurts but it feels great to have the love, the support from the community still keeping Kingston’s name out there, still keeping his spirit alive,” said Coles.

Anyone with information about Kingston’s death is asked to contact Detective T. Hall at 434-455-6155. You can share information anonymously via Crime Stoppers at (888) 798-5900 or online at P3tips.com.
