Community remembers 2 men shot, killed in Greater Grand Crossing

CHICAGO — As the Greater Grand Crossing community continues to recover from a deadly shooting earlier this week, family members and local leaders came together to grieve the two men who died in the shooting.

“We come to wrap our arms around the family that had to unexpectedly bury a love one,” said Ald. William Hall (6th Ward) at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church Friday.

On Monday just before 6 p.m., police said four people, including the alleged suspect Trivell Pruitt, were shot after Pruitt opened fire at another man during an argument.

Victims include 59-year-old Simon Brown Sr., who was buying a lottery ticket, and 47-year-old Jon Rucker, who was using the ATM at the time of the incident.

Brown Sr. and Rucker are both believed to be innocent bystanders who were killed in the crossfire.

Brown Sr.’s son — Simon Brown Jr. — was among the crowd remembering his father and Rucker Friday night.

“I appreciate the sentiment of everybody being here,” Brown Jr. said. “It’s foundational to have community.”

Hall said religious leaders and people of faith are hoping to heal their communities from gun violence by committing to a three-part action plan.

“No. 1, we’re going to serve our community, work closely with our block clubs, my office and work closely with every city department,” Hall said. “Secondly we going to support each other. Last but not least, we’re going to literally stay connected.”
