SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Community advocates are calling on San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria to address some of the most dangerous intersections in the city.

The organization, called Circulate San Diego, sent the mayor a letter, pleading for him to include repairs to the 15 most dangerous intersections in the fiscal year budget.

On Monday, members of the group were joined by other concerned citizens as they gathered at the intersection of Rosecrans and Moore streets in the Midway District.

“You can see there is no pedestrian crossing at all,” said Will Moore, policy counsel for Circulate San Diego. “There is a major county service center here that people cross the street, sidewalks suddenly disappear on the other side of the street right at Rosecrans and Moore. Statistically, more people are killed at this intersection than almost any other.”

Circulate San Diego, which tracks traffic trends across the county, considers Rosecrans and Moore one of San Diego’s most dangerous intersections — nicknamed the “Fatal Fifteen.”

“My husband had gone out for the night and he was walking home, and he got hit by a vehicle on Market and 19th,” said Katie Gordon with Families for Safe Streets San Diego, who also attended the gathering. She shared a photo of her husband and their two young daughters, who had just celebrated their first birthday a few months before he was killed.

Circulate San Diego estimates that each intersection would cost about $100,000 to repair, which would total $1.5 million to fix the Fatal Fifteen.
