Community leaders address public safety after Orange Mound shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Community leaders came together for an emergency town hall meeting in Orange Mound Saturday morning, where they addressed issues of public safety in the community.

The meeting was held at Mt. Pisgah CME Church at 10 a.m. in response to a shooting Sunday night that killed a woman and injured two others, including a baby.

In the case discussed at the meeting, someone shot into a car carrying two adults and three children at the corner of Park Avenue and Pendleton Street.

State Representative G. A. Hardaway, Senator Raumesh Akbari, Shelby County Commissioner Britney Thornton, and other community leaders are calling the incident a “call to action” for the city.

Meeting organizers say the crime and public safety issues have spread “like wildfire” beyond just Orange Mound.

They are seeking community members, business owners, law enforcement, and other elected officials to come together and develop a concrete plan to address the issue.

“Faith without work is dead. It’s time to get off your behinds, even the council, anybody that’s an elected official needs to get off their behinds and stop all this talking,” said Whitehaven resident, Karen Collier. “That’s all I’m hearing is a lot of talking. You hear the community crying out, but our elected officials are talking and that’s it. It’s time to take action.”
