New community hospital to be built in northern York County, WellSpan says

As officials broke ground Tuesday morning for the WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital, the healthcare system announced that neighborhood hospitals also will be built in northern York County and Carlisle.

The community hospital in northern York County will be constructed near Interstate 83 in Newberry Township, spokesman Ryan Coyle said. The exact location is not being released at this time.

Groundbreaking on the hospitals in Newberry Township and Carlisle are expected to occur by the summer, he said.

WellSpan announced last year that it planned to build three community hospital in southcentral Pennsylvania.

WellSpan breaks ground on new hospital in southern York County

State and local elected leaders as well WellSpan officials turned the dirt for the new hospital 13515 Wolfe Road in Hopewell Township. It is near the I-83 Shrewsbury interchange.

Dr. David Vega, senior vice president and chief medical officer, said the neighborhood hospitals will allow for a number of key benefits, including increased access to WellSpan world-class care and specialists in the community.

Southern York County is one of the fastest-growing areas in the region, and access to premier healthcare is one of the amenities families and businesses seek in a community, Kevin Schreiber, CEO of the York County Economic Alliance, said during the event.

"Today really does mark a new beginning chapter for healthcare here in the Shrewsbury area and throughout York County," Schreiber said. "I'm certainly confident that the impact of this neighborhood hospital will be felt for generations to come."

It will feature a 24/7 emergency department, 10-inpatient beds, diagnostic services, such as ultrasound, CT, X-ray and laboratory services, the healthcare system has announced. It will serve residents in southern York County and northern Maryland.

The emergencies that can be treated at the hospital include: chest pain, dehydration, overdoses, pain control, strokes, pneumonia and more.

WellSpan's Urgent Care, which is about a mile from the new hospital, will remain, Coyle said.

WellSpan has said the hospitals will be fully licensed and branded with its name. The facilities will be operated and staffed by Emerus, which has similar partnerships with other healthcare systems.

The new hospital in southern York County is expected to open in 2025.
