Community efforts underway amid wildfires at panhandle

SAN ANGELO, Texas — These fires have caused mass devastation, and Palmer Feed has partnered with the Water Valley FFA to collect donations for the ranchers affected by the fires.

Palmer Feed and Supply Inc. Vice President Bridget Scott says her phone line has been busy, as friends and customers have been calling about family members’ animals impacted by the wildfires in the panhandle.

She says today, Water Valley FFA reached out to partner up to help other ranchers.

“So far, in less than what are we six or eight hours from the beginning, we’ve had almost $1,000 donated, several tons of feed plus dog food, salt mineral. So, the goal is to continue to gather money. We will do some type of discount so we can get as much feed up there as we can to the areas in need,” she said

And it’s been a team effort for first responders. Johnny Fisher with the San Angelo Fire Department says hundreds of personnel are working to contain the fires, and over 100 pieces of equipment throughout the state have been deployed.

Some people might be concerned about having so many people up there. Here back in San Angelo and the county, we’ve still got our staffing and manning taking care of the citizens of San Angelo and Tom Green County,” he said.

Scott says it’s important that the community has come together to help the wildlife and people in need.

“The community has been the amazing part of it all because of access to immediate phone calls and immediate people reaching out, “What can we do?” And it’s not that they know someone individual that’s up there. They just know that the community is in need. And Texans, in general, are great about helping communities and neighbors and friends and reaching out, and so I’m very proud and honored that we can be a part in helping hopefully ease some of the pain that they have at the moment,” said Scott.
