DENVER (KDVR) — Officers in Commerce City fired shots at a man who was allegedly armed with a knife and said he planned to kill his family.

Just after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Commerce City Police Department patrol officers were called to a home in the 7000 block of Garden Lane after dispatchers received a call from a 22-year-old man who said he was armed with a knife and threatened to kill his family.

The home is next to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

When officers arrived at the home, they said they attempted to de-escalate the situation with the man, but he proved uncooperative.

According to police, the man refused to listen to officers when they repeatedly told him to drop the knife. The officers then fired their duty weapons. It is unclear at this time how many officers fired their guns.

The man was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries. As of Friday morning, FOX31 has not received an update on his well-being.

The Critical Incident Response Team for the 17th Judicial District is conducting an investigation. All the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per Commerce City police protocol.
