Commerce City police double fines in new zones to slow down speeders

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) — Signs are up in Commerce City warning drivers to slow down or get ready to pay big traffic fines.

New high-traffic hazard zones have been designated in places where police statistics show speeders are causing a lot of problems. Two of those high-traffic hazard zones will be on Highway 2 and Tower Road soon.

Joel Rios works in a car shop next to Highway 2 and sees fast-moving cars all the time.

“Just bang! That man went fast. Just pass. And no hesitation, no nothing!” Rios said.

To try and slow traffic down traffic, fines will double in four different stretches of Highway 2 and Tower Road. FOX31 crews witnessed several vehicles that appeared to be blatantly speeding.

“You can definitely tell that they are speeding. Second of all is that there are other vehicles on the road that they are putting in danger, as well as the police officers that are on the road trying to enforce these laws,” Commerce City Police Traffic Sergeant Nicholas Arias said.

Just along one hazard zone, more than 400 speeding tickets were issued from January to September last year. One driver was stopped by police going 121 miles an hour near one of the hotspots.

The new high-traffic hazard zones will run along Tower Road between 81st and 87th and then again from 96th to 103rd Avenues. Other zones will be established on Highway 2 between 88th and 95th and 72nd to 79th Avenues.

Rios is just glad slower, safer traffic may be coming.

“There’s just a whole lot of nonsense for no reason,” Rios said.

Commerce City police say the new enforcement plan starts March 18.
