Comedy Central's new show 'Corporate' offers a hilariously dark take on office jobs
“Corporate,” a new scripted comedy series about work-life in America, debuts on Comedy Central on Wednesday.
Co-creators and co-stars Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman told Yahoo Finance that the show is about two young executives-in-training and the ups and downs and day-to-day struggles of office life.
“It’s kind of like you know how your job is great, but it’s still kind of a nightmare because it’s a job. It’s kind of like how everyone feels that way even if you make millions of dollars, and I hope you all are, it still sucks to have a job and be an adult, and that’s funny,” Weisman tells Yahoo Finance in the video above.
Ingebretson and Weisman can both draw upon their own experiences in the corporate world. For example, when Ingebretson moved to Los Angeles and was doing stand-up comedy at night he held a day job doing digital and social media with an overbearing boss.
“I worked for a lot of major entertainment corporations that I won’t name,” Ingebretson says. “And, I had a job once where my boss … micromanaged me with such intensity, it felt like she was performing psychological experiments on me.”
Weisman says he had a boss who once put his false teeth on his desk. “Huge power play. I recommend it to anyone who’s watching. It’s very intimidating.”
While there are many comedies set in offices, Comedy Central, a Viacom (VIA) property, was receptive to this nihilistic take.
“So all the employees at Comedy Central have corporate jobs. So when we pitched a [show] about how working at a corporation is bad, guess what? They agreed,” Weisman says.
“We’re basically making a TV show about the lives of the people who work at Comedy Central,” Ingebretson adds.
