Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) on Wednesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations.

The company reported third-quarter earnings of 92 cents a share on revenue of $21.31 billion.

Analysts expected Comcast to report third-quarter earnings of 91 cents a share on revenue of $21.16 billion, according to Thomson Reuters consensus estimates.

That compares to earnings of 80 cents a share on revenue of $18.7 billion in the same period last year.

Shares of Comcast were trading higher in premarket trade after the announcement.

"I'm pleased to report that our businesses generated double-digit revenue and operating cash flow growth for the third quarter of 2016," Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said in a statement. "Cable delivered solid operating cash flow growth coupled with great customer metrics, and has now added 170,000 video subscribers over the past twelve months."

Roberts also said the Rio Olympics were the "most profitable and successful" games in the company's history. NBCUniversal reported operating cash flow growth of 30 percent, in part from the Olympics and growth at its theme parks. "The Secret Life of Pets" animated movie also contributed to the bottom line.

The company's video customers increased by 32,000, the best third quarter result in 10 years, the company said. And its high speed internet customers increased by 330,000, the best third quarter result in 7 years.

NBCUniversal revenue increased 28.3 percent to $9.2 billion in the quarter, according to the earnings release.

The company said its cable networks revenue rose 22 percent to $2.9 billion in the quarter, while broadcast revenue increased 56.6 percent to $3.1 billion. Theme park revenue jumped 60.6 percent to $1.4 billion, but filmed entertainment revenue declined 7.9 percent to $1.8 billion.

Earlier this month, the company was hit with a fine by the FCC after allegations the company wrongfully charged its customers for services and equipment. Comcast issued a statement on Oct. 11 that its been working hard to improve the experience.

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that NBCUniversal's revenue was $9.2 billion in the third quarter.
