Columbus to receive $1 million for environmental site evaluations

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Columbus Consolidated Government (CCG) is set to receive $1 million to conduct environment site assessments, community engagement and more.

The money comes from an infrastructure law designed to expedite the clean up of hazardous materials.

According to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA), the funds will be used to clean up the Bradley Circle Properties listed below:

  • 2838 Bradley Circle

  • 2 27th Street

  • 5 27th Street

  • 9 27th Street

  • 2711 1st Avenue

  • 2715 1st Avenue

  • 2719 1st Avenue

  • 2805 1st Avenue

The EPA says these locations were previously an unregulated landfill used to dump textile waste and are contaminated.

Funding will also go toward the inventory of “brownfield” sites, which the EPA says are areas which may be contaminated by a hazardous substance or pollutant.

The target areas for this project include Columbus’s Southside, Liberty District, Midtown, and Mill District areas. Assessment will focus on the Winterfield Center and the Southside Industrial Park.
