Columbus Police officer body camera reveals him saving elderly woman from house fire

A Columbus police officer helped save an elderly woman from a house fire while patrolling the area of Veterans Parkway, according to video footage and police reports.

In the early morning hours of May 10, according to police, Officer Michael Coley, with the Columbus Police Department, was patrolling the area of Veterans Parkway and Hancock Road when he began to smell smoke.

Coley discovered a residence engulfed in flames in the 2900 block of Waterhill Road, according to police.

Footage from Coley’s body camera show him call the fire into dispatch and begin running around the house knocking on doors and windows trying to alert anyone inside.

Neighbors advised Coley there was one occupant in the home, according to a news release. In the body camera footage another officer can be seen kicking in the door to the residence to gain entry.

Smoke is visible in the house and Coley can be heard coughing from time to time from the smoke in the footage.

In the footage Coley finds an 89-year-old woman in a bedroom in the residence and helps escort her outside.

The video reveals how Coley coaxed the woman out of her room, covered her face from the smoke and lead her thorugh the house, repeatedly talking her through the ordeal.

A news release from CPD states:

“Officer Coley’s quick thinking, bravery, and dedication exemplifies the highest standard of law enforcement. His heroic actions serve as a shining example of the Columbus Police Department’s unwavering duty to protect and serve the citizens of Columbus.”
