Columbus City Council discusses multi-million dollar spiderweb road improvement project

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Columbus City Council met Tuesday morning, discussing a number of topics. On the agenda – an update regarding the city’s outstanding and pending infrastructure projects.

Deputy City Manager, Pam Hodge, covered projects around town from resurfacing roads to adding signals and lights. On that list is the ongoing roadway project known as the “spiderweb project.” It aims to improve route conditions by building a four-lane bridge over the railroad tracks on Buena Vista Road.

Often referred to as the spiderweb, the South Columbus intersection connects Buena Vista Road to other roads including St Mary’s Road and Andrews Road.

During the meeting, Hodge said the Phase 1 roundabout of the spiderweb and the Annette Avenue signal are both complete.

The spiderweb project is a $40-million dollar plan funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST).

The Spiderweb project is kind of back in motion. We had to delay it for a little bit because the construction costs got so outrageous. It’s another example of the TSPLOST that this region passed. It allowed us to take on some really large projects that by ourselves, we probably would not have been able to access revenue from from the Department of Transportation. But this has been a problem area in Columbus for the people that live in that area of town for a long time. That spider web is kind of difficult to navigate, particularly as you’ve come across that railroad trestle.

Hodge says the bid process for the construction of the bridge is ongoing. Bids are due back in early May.
