Columbiana County boy, 12, killed with crossbow in hunting incident

A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot with a crossbow while hunting for deer earlier week in the Highlandtown Wildlife Area in Columbiana County.

Ethan J. Barker of Madison Township, near Wellsville, was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at East Liverpool City Hospital in East Liverpool.

Without identifying the boy, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued a statement that said its wildlife officers responded to the report of a hunting incident on Sunday morning. The boy had been on an outing with two other juveniles and an adult hunting deer.

The agency is still investigating what happened and how the boy was shot with the arrow.

An obituary posted by Dawson Funeral Homes in East Liverpool said Ethan was a seventh grade student at Beaver Local Schools and he had played football for the Southern Local football team. He leaves behind his mother, two brothers, his sister and several members of his extended family.

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Dawson Funeral Home with a service to follow at 5 p.m.
