Colts Pro Bowl player wants to be a cop
The Indianapolis Colts have been blessed over the last decade with several Pro Bowl players. From quarterbacks to defensive backs, and even a long snapper. Yes, that is right, Colts long snapper Matt Overton made the Pro Bowl back in 2013.
You can still catch Overton snapping long balls to Pat McAfee for the Colts on Sunday’s, but he has already started preparing for a life outside of the NFL.
In a recent interview with Mike Wells of ESPN.com, Overton talked about how he is now preparing to live a life in law enforcement after his playing days come to an end.
“Football has worked out so far and I’m lucky to be here, but I’m also looking at life after football, Being a cop is in my family’s blood. My dad was a cop and he just retired this year. He did 31 years in law enforcement, so basically my entire life he’s been a cop. It’s a passion of mine.”
Overton has taken several ride-alongs with police around Indianapolis over the last several years, and has been very outspoken on his Twitter account about his love for the police. And he went into more detail with Wells on that subject.
“You sit in the car and watch, You never know what’s going to happen, but the information that they have is pretty legit. They do their research on the house and suspects. They’re not going to take me in a high-risk situation. Usually it’s no guns involved that they know of. Never been any violence. Usually, it’s homes that I’ve gone to before. That’s how I’ve been learning. Every officer I’m with is different. It’s critical for me to see how each officer acts.”
Overton’s father was a Swat team officer, and as much as it will be said to see him retire one day, it is nice to know that he will still help the community in other ways when his playing days are over.
