What will colors and mascot be for new Clovis South High? Here’s what we know

Clovis Unified School District’s new attendance boundaries for 2025 onward have been set, and now the district will soon decide the the colors and mascot for Clovis South High School.

The candidates for those identity symbols were not shared when The Bee asked the district via email.

“Work began on this process earlier this spring and we were waiting to finalize the process until boundaries were identified,” said Kelly Avants, district spokesperson.

Now that Sanchez Intermediate School has been named, the district confirmed that the mascot and colors will be the same for these two schools since they compose the Terry P. Bradley Educational Center.

This is not unusual for Clovis, since other schools form educational centers too. For example, Reyburn Intermediate and Clovis East High are both the Timberwolves at the Reagan Educational Center, and Granite Ridge Intermediate and Clovis North High are the Broncos at the Clovis North Educational Center.

Avants said that Clovis South’s area superintendent and the high school’s principal have been surveying families and students who will attend the new high school. They’ve shared some possible color and mascot ideas, she said.

Community input also was taken, including through meetings held with families with children attending the schools, which are scheduled to open August 2025.

Clovis South High School forms part of three new schools that will open in the recently established Clovis South Area. This new area is located within the already established district boundaries; Clovis Unified did not expand in territory but reorganized internally. Clovis South High School and newly named Sanchez intermediate school will open in 2025, along with recently named Hirayama elementary school next fall.

Having some schools over-enrolled and others under-enrolled, the district deemed it necessary to open these new schools to accommodate the growing student population it serves.

The new elementary school is named after Satoshi “Fibber” Hirayama. The school’s name and colors were revealed over a year ago, and its mascot and colors soon after.

The process of suggesting ideas for Clovis South High started earlier this spring, Avants said, and a few options were narrowed down and shared in follow-up meetings.

Given that the community suggestions segment of the process is finalized, and Sanchez Intermediate has been named, Clovis Unified’s board will be presented with a final recommendation and cast their final vote to approve the schools’ mascot and colors later this month.

Clovis Unified’s board of trustees meets every other Wednesday in the district’s Professional Development Building., 1680 David E Cook Way. The board first meets in closed session, with a public session scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m..

Two more board meetings remain this school year – May 22 and June 12 – before the board reconvenes on July 17 for the 2024-2025 school year. You can find more information and the board’s meeting schedule online at cusd.com/BoardMeetingsAgendasArchives.aspx.
