(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs neighbors are getting together this summer for the city’s 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings initiative. The initiative, which Mayor Yemi Mobolade has called a “thousand neighborhood block party” exists to counteract isolation and loneliness by encouraging neighbors to cultivate a stronger sense of community and connection by planning more neighborhood events.

On Thursday, Mar. 28, the Mayor and City Council met at the headquarters of CONO, a local neighborhood-building organization to announce the official beginning of the initiative.

“It’s one of my priorities to raise awareness about the importance of mental health while providing concrete action and resources for community members,” said the Mayor. “Strong communities are built on the foundation of connectedness with our neighbors. By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, we can lift each other up and create a sense of belonging that is essential for overall well-being.”

25% of adults in Colorado reported struggling with a mental health condition, and from 2020-2022, suicide was the leading cause of death among youth, ages 11 to 17 and the second leading cause of death among young adults 18-24.

“As I’ve engaged with our community, I’ve been inundated with personal accounts of individuals succumbing to isolation and loneliness,” said David Leinweber, City Council, At Large. “This initiative isn’t just about numbers—it’s about a thousand stories intertwining, a thousand hands reaching out, and a thousand hearts uniting against isolation while fostering stronger connections within our community.”

The official launch of the 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings initiative will be May 18-19, during Mental Health Awareness Month, and will run through September 28, National Good Neighbor Day. Block party planning resources are available on the city’s website. Neighbors who hold a block party or gathering are encouraged to register their event to count toward the City’s goal of 1,000 gatherings.

“I believe a strong city is built on the foundation of connectedness,” Mayor Mobolade said.

“I am challenging all Colorado Springs residents to take part in this 1000-neighborhood gathering movement,” he continued. “Meet new friends, strengthen existing relationships and create a support system that can have a profound impact on our individual and collective mental well-being. Whether it’s a simple conversation over a plate of food or shutting down the street for an epic block party, these events are ways to come together, to share stories and to build lasting friendship.”
