Colorado schools closed for second day due to power outages

DENVER (KDVR) — On Monday night, Xcel Energy said crews expected to restore power to 90% of impacted customers. However, a handful of schools will be closed a second day in a row due to the prolonged outage.

The high winds from the weekend had impacts that are now lasting for four days. Over the weekend, a massive windstorm brought gusts reaching up to 90 mph in some counties.

Xcel said that the 10% who are still without power on Tuesday are in the hardest hit areas, including southwest of the metro, in Arvada and the Boulder foothills.

On Monday, several Colorado schools in four districts had to close due to a loss of power. Some of those schools remain closed on Tuesday.

Jefferson County Public Schools

  • Applewood Cottages – all

  • Litz Building

  • Maple Grove Elementary School

  • Stober Elementary School

  • Foster K-8

Jefferson County Public Schools said only three of these campuses serve students. All other schools in the district are open on Tuesday.

It is unclear when power will be restored to these campuses, but Jeffco said they expect classes to resume on Wednesday.

Please check your district’s website or contact your school about outages and closures.

As of 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Xcel Energy is reporting 484 outages are still affecting 5,745 customers across Colorado. The areas with the most outages are near Lakewood and Arvada, as they were some of the hardest hit areas from Saturday’s storm.

At one point, Xcel said 155,000 customers were without power during this storm. About 100,000 lost power due to damage, but 55,000 had their power cut to reduce the wildfire risk if a line blew down.
