Colorado releases insect health study

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado Native Pollinating Insects Health Study has officially been released.

The study is said to be “the most robust and detailed account of pollinator health ever undertaken in the state.”

Colorado is home to many native insects and bats that help in the pollinator process.

Co-author of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources Pollinator Report Adrian Carper tells WesternSlopeNow which insects pollinate the most plants here in Colorado.

“There are lots of pollinating insects. Any insect that visits a flower and moves pollen around can be a pollinator. And for sure we know the most about bees. And so, our native pollinators are over a thousand species of native bees here in Colorado. Including bumble bees and sweat bees and orchard bees. Also, over 250 species of butterflies as well as moths, beetles, and lots of different flies and wasps.”

According to the USDA Colorado crops generated nearly $3 million in 2023.
