(COLORADO) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, March 4 handed a win to former President Donald Trump by ruling the states cannot kick him off the ballot over his actions leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the capitol, bringing an end to the case ahead of Super Tuesday.

“It’s a decisive victory,” Dave Williams, Colorado GOP Chairman said. “We’re happy about this ruling. It should never have gotten this far, but nonetheless, we’re happy that it happened and we look forward to Donald Trump not only winning in Colorado but also dominating in every other Super Tuesday state.”

Trump thanked the court for their decision, stating that cases like these block a candidate from being able to do their job.

“You cannot take somebody out of a race,” Trump explained. “The voters can take the person out of the race very quickly, but a court shouldn’t be doing that and the Supreme Court saw that very well.”

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold responded to the ruling, and said she is glad a decision was made, but is disappointed with the outcome.

“We believe it’s within the state’s rights under our federalist government system to decide whether to include or exclude oath-breaking insurrectionists,” Griswold said.

Members of the GOP said the decision gives voters the ability to support the candidate they think is best.

“If we don’t have that then we really don’t have free and fair elections, so shame on Jena Griswold and shame on the petitioners for trying to take away the people’s right to vote,” Williams said.

Secretary Griswold continued to say she will support the Supreme Court’s decision, meaning votes for Trump will be counted in Colorado on Super Tuesday.

“I expect her to fully comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on this, but I think it’s too little, too late,” Williams explained. “The fact that she helped the petitioners try to take away our vote and disqualify Donald Trump is enough for her to no longer be in office. She should certainly resign. But if she doesn’t resign, then the Colorado Republican Party is going to explore all our options to include a recall.”

“That’s a ridiculous statement,” Griswold explained. “First off, this lawsuit was brought by Republican and unaffiliated voters, I did not bring the lawsuit. I agreed that the Colorado Supreme Court got it right and always said that I would follow the Supreme Court’s decision. So, unfortunately, more partisan politics from the leader of the GOP. But ultimately, I’m always going to stand up for the right to vote our Constitution and our democracy.”

Trump still faces four criminal cases, including one in New York City set to go to trial later this month over an alleged hush money scheme during the 2016 campaign.

As a reminder, Super Tuesday is approaching and so far 959,315 ballots have been returned in the Colorado Presidential primary. Ballots are due by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5.
