Colorado pie shop to reopen after employee’s foot went through damaged floor

DENVER (KDVR) — An Estes Park pie shop is set to reopen on Saturday after being closed for over a month after an employee’s foot fell through the kitchen floor.

You Need Pie! Diner and Bakery on Big Thompson Avenue is a breakfast-through-dinner eatery, best known for its pies.

The shop shut down over a month ago after an employee’s foot went right through the floor due to an unnoticed leak that damaged the floorboard around the sink, according to the restaurant’s GoFundMe.

The shop was closed for longer than expected, as owner Valerie Thompson said there were troubles with the insurance claim and the company denied the claim due to long-term damage. While the shop was fighting the claim, Thompson posted on GoFundMe looking for help with the employees’ salaries.

“These are good, honest hard-working people who I love, and who work every day to make my life easier and create the delicious food and bakery items that you all enjoy,” You Need Pie’s Thompson wrote on GoFundMe. “I’d imagine most people in Estes Park are in the same boat that if you suddenly had to do without income for six weeks, it wouldn’t be pretty.”

Since then, the community has shown its love through donations and kind comments.

The bakery has raised over $4,000 since the GoFundMe post and the announcement on Facebook in late February.

“I will never forget when Little Valley was evacuated due to the Kruger Rock fire. We all left our houses in minutes, and were stunned, and scared, gathered at the Events Center, and you showed up with coffee and pie. It was an amazing, heart-warming gesture,” Cheri commented on the shop’s Facebook.

“my favorite restaurant that I take everyone who visits to eat in Estes Park.I love that place ,the best,” Barbara commented.

After over six weeks of waiting, the shop is reopening. Thompson told FOX31 that the shop is set to open on Saturday, March 2, at 8 a.m. just in time for the townwide dine-around.

In Estes Park, restaurants all around town participate and provide a $6 tasting plate, said Thompson. Customers go from restaurant to restaurant and try all the offerings on Thursday nights in March from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The restaurant is gearing up for Saturday’s opening with all sorts of pies already in the works.
